WINNIPEG - Manitoba Liberals are calling on the Pallister Government to have the province's chief medical examiner perform an inquest into the overdose death of Christine Mitchell, who died at the home of Rod Sage, the administrator who runs the City of Brandon.
Manitoba Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont made the request, together with Liberal Justice Critic Jon Gerrard, in a letter to Justice Minister Cliff Cullen and Premier Brian Pallister.
The Liberals have also asked the PCs to bring in a separate police force to investigate, since Sage sits on the Brandon Police board - though as a non-voting member.
"This is clearly an exceptional situation, but we can't have a situation where the police are investigating someone who sits on the police board," said Lamont. "We do not want to prejudge what happened, but this is a case that is about addictions as much as it is about crime, which is why there must be an inquest."
