Manitoba Liberals Hosts Senior’s Advocate Event

The Manitoba Liberals are hosting a public online forum to raise awareness for the need for an official Independent Seniors' Advocate tonight, Tuesday, March 23, at 7:00 PM via Zoom.

Cindy Lamoureux, Manitoba Liberal MLA for Tyndall Park, has been advocating for this initiative since 2016.

"The idea of having a Senior's Advocate is not new, but the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted various concerns relating to seniors going unnoticed. We need a non-partisan Senior's Advocate where seniors and families can turn to when facing issues within facilities, homecare, home repairs, transportation, and other decisions made by this government," said Lamoureux.

Manitoba Liberals released a report in January outlining how the situation that has persisted over the past 20 years under two governments, and are renewing their call for change by immediately creating a senior's advocate.

The Senior's Advocate would assist in creating policies and recommendations that allow for the proper and dignified care of seniors, and advocate for better care on a case-by-case basis for seniors and their families who are affected by shortcomings of the system.

Speakers at the forum will be: -Isobel Mackenzie, Office of the BC Senior's Advocate -Cindy Lamoureux, MLA for Tyndall Park -Eddie Calisto-Tavares, Advocate

"For more than a generation, seniors and their families' complaints have been ignored and swept under the rug by the NDP and PCs alike. With an independent Senior's Advocate, that won't happen any more," said Dougald Lamont, Manitoba Liberal Leader and MLA for St. Boniface.
