The Manitoba Liberal Party today announced that they will select a new party leader on Saturday, October 21, 2017. The day-long event will be held in Winnipeg at the Victoria Inn and Hotel Convention Centre. Former Member of Parliament and past interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Bob Rae will attend the event as a special guest speaker.
“We are excited to announce this important date to our party members and also the general public,” said Wendy Martin White, Co-Chair of the Manitoba Liberal Party Leadership Committee. “There has never been a more important time for Liberals in Manitoba and the selection of a new Leader will help advance the rebuilding process that the party is currently undergoing.”
The leadership contest will formally start on May 15, 2017, when contestants may begin submitting their completed applications.
“The Manitoba Liberal Party Leadership Committee is committed to ensuring accessibility throughout our leadership contest and to achieve that, we will be holding a number of debates and other public events,” said Sandy Chahal, Co-Chair of the Manitoba Liberal Party Leadership Committee. “We want our members and the public to engage with us during the selection of a new leader and to help the party provide a strong and balanced voice for Manitoba.”
Leadership contestants will be subject to a green light process and the winner will be selected using a one member, one vote system. Manitoba Liberal Party leadership contest rules are approved by the party’s Board of Directors with advice from the party’s Provincial Council. The Manitoba Liberal Party will launch its leadership contest webpage on Manitobaliberals.ca in mid-February and contest rules will be made available to members and the public via the site.
