Manitoba Liberal Party Board of Directors appoints
Judy Klassen, MLA for Kewatinook as Interim Leader
Winnipeg, MB – The Manitoba Liberal Party’s Board of Directors has appointed Judy Klassen, MLA for Kewatinook, as Interim Leader. Judy assumes this role effective immediately.
As MLA for the largest constituency in the province, and a passionate advocate for all Manitobans, Judy will continue to work with her fellow Manitoba Liberal MLA’s to present a strong Liberal voice in the Legislature.
As Interim Leader, Klassen will be responsible for working with constituency associations to solidify the party’s organization in all regions of the province. She will also participate in outreach to new and current party members as well as supporting the Board of Directors’ fundraising activities.
“It’s an honour to accept the position of Interim Leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party,” says Klassen. “I believe this party can prove to Manitobans that we are a thoughtful, constructive and compassionate party with a real drive to change things for the better.”
“Judy is an amazing person who cares deeply about the region that she represents,” says Peter Koroma, Manitoba Liberal Party President. “I have no doubt she will do a great job attracting new supporters and leading our party during this time of transition.”
As a rule, Klassen shall not run for permanent leadership, unless she steps down from the position no later than June 20, 2017 —after which time she will be ineligible for the permanent position.
With a new Interim Leader in place, Manitoba Liberals will focus their efforts on fundraising and organization of constituency associations.
On Saturday, October 15, 2016, Provincial Council members recommended to the Board of Directors that the contest to select a new Leader be held in the fall of 2017. The Board will consider this recommendation at their next meeting.
