Bill 230: A MENTAL HEALTH BILL OF RIGHTS FOR MANITOBA

December 2, I introduced into the Manitoba Legislature, Bill 230 which will provide for a Bill of Rights for those with Mental Health Issues. Since I was first elected to the Manitoba Legislature in 1999, I have found that there needs to be much better attention to mental illness in Manitoba, to doing a much better job of preventing illness and to making sure those with mental illnesses are treated fairly and well.

It is time for those who have mental health conditions to be treated with compassion, dignity and respect at all times;

Those with a mental illness have a right to have the support received from their family and friends recognized;

It is imperative that people with mental illnesses receive services quickly, that their release from an institution such as a hospital be adequately planned, and that adequate support be available for them in the community on discharge;
