For those in the know, Manitoba's NDP make themselves into a laughing stock.
The Doer NDP have become a laughing stock for making ridiculous claims. The latest is their claim in their press release of July 30, to be first in establishing Canada an interprovincial wilderness area. This claim was made with respect to the World Heritage Site proposed by members of the First Nation community in 2002.
But, for over a century (1885), the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks comprised of Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta and Yoho, Kootenay Mount Robson, Mount Assiniboine and Hamber located in British Columbia have existed and referred to as the birthplace of Canada’s national park system.
On August 25, 1989, Alberta and Saskatchewan signed the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park agreement creating another interprovincial park.
The Kluane National Park encompassing British Columbia, Alaska and the Yukon is part of the largest internationally protected area in the world.
On an international level, in 1932 the Upper Waterton Lake, the deepest lake in the British Columbia Canadian Rockies was joined with Montana's Glacier National Park to form the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park – the first of its kind worldwide.
All of the parks above are protected UNESCO world heritage sites.
In typical NDP fashion the announcement also fails to give credit where credit is due. Manitoba’s Boreal UNESCO world heritage site nomination was initiated by First Nations in 2002, not by the provincial government.
“In 6 years, the government has not done anything to add protected land for the world heritage sites. The provincial parks in today’s announcement have been protected for many years,” Dr. Gerrard said. “They must ensure that lands plans are in place to take this project forward but sadly little has been accomplished.”
