Upper Fort Garry and the North Gate
Upper Fort Garry was the birthplace of the province of Manitoba and as such this site and its future deserves very special consideration from the provincial government. Clearly as a mark of respect for our history, this site needs to be not only preserved, but displayed in such a way, with an appropriate interpretive centre, that all Manitobans will be able to visit and appreciate this important site in the full context of its historic importance.
The North Gate is all that is now left of Upper Fort Garry. It is time to make the North Gate the centre of a major attraction at this site. It is important to retain the historic context in which Upper Fort Garry was located along the Assiniboine River and near the Forks.
The proposal to put a 15 storey apartment building at the site of Manitoba’s birthplace will block the needed full development of this site in its historic context. Of critical importance are the links between the Fort and the Assiniboine River and the Forks. The proposed apartment building will be between the existing North Gate and the Assiniboine River and would block the development of this site in its historic context connected closely to the Assiniboine River and to the Forks.
